Painted Archway

I call it Debre Markos’ “Arc de Triomphe” because it really looks like it. It sits on a hill just above the center of town and there is a park where locals seem to hang out. Behind this arch is Washa Mikael Church.

I assume it commemorates the surrender of some 14,000 Italian troops to a mere 300 members of the combined Ethiopian-Allied army in April 1941, a key event in the collapse of the Italian occupation and therefore ending the only short period of time Ethiopia was ruled by a foreign power (1935-41).

Somehow, I felt like experimenting a bit and to give the photograph the appearance of an old painting using Google’s Analog Efex Pro (formerly NIK Software).

Children of Bahir Dar II
I was on my way to the one-table fish market behind the St. George’s Church mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide when as so often in Ethiopia, children started to congregate around me and soon they were asking me to take their photograph. The first guy stepped onto this elevation and what followed could almost be called a short photo shoot.

More guys did the same, individually and as pairs but then their teacher stepped in and thought it was enough. I feel that he wanted to protect me and the situation as things can get a bit confusing once the kids become too comfortable and playful. My Travels in 2014 - April 13, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Boy on the Rocks

I was waiting for the boat just behind the Ghion Hotel to join a group to visit some of the monasteries on the Zege peninsula. On that shoreline, a lot of locals gather to swim, wash clothes or just look onto Lake Tana like this young boy I caught from afar.

I simply could not pass this gate without taking a photo … I never saw them on TV but certain things one cannot escape and I absolutely love coming across such international “symbols” in faraway lands …

Are You Taking My Picture?

When I started to point my camera at this man, he was standing with the back to me … it is just amazing how people notice when someone is looking at them even if they cannot see you right away … I actually like it that he turned around but I am not so sure whether I want to know what his thoughts were …
